Pictures
The picture on the home page (“Chess Duel at Persepolis”), the logo and the favicon are generated with artificial intelligence. They are artistic depictions, not historical portraits.
Chess pieces
The pieces on the chessboards are the piece set “cburnett” by Colin M. L. Burnett, as also used on lichess. They are under the GNU General Public License, version 2 or later, and are used unchanged.
Licence text: GPL-2.0.txt
Game data
Most of the games come from the data source “Chess Database” by Ana Schaigorodsky (2016), published on Figshare: Figshare Chess Database. It is under the licence Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0). The game Légal – Saint Brie (Paris 1750) has come down to us in the public domain.
The data were modified for our own use: single famous games were selected and given titles, explanations and hints; the 22 positions of the combinations and mating patterns are made from them. The basic forms of the mating patterns are positions of our own.
Chess engine
The site delivers the chess engine Stockfish in the version stockfish.js 19 (Stockfish 19 lite, WebAssembly). It is under the GNU General Public License, version 3, is delivered unchanged and, when used, runs entirely in the visitors' browser; no data is transmitted.
